Career Options in STEM

Career Options in STEM, or COSTEM, is an interdistrict initiative designed to challenge young women in middle school to enroll in high-level technology, science, technology, engineering, and math courses, while exploring careers in these areas. In “How Schools Shortchange Girls,” a report from the American Association of University Women, a drop in both girls’ math confidence and achievement in the middle school years and the gender gap in science may, in fact, be increasing.

Additionally, the report states, even girls who are highly competent in math and science are less likely to pursue technological or scientific careers than their male classmates. COSTEM focuses on building academic skills in science, technology, engineering, and math. The students further develop their ability to solve problems in these content areas and build their confidence using hands-on, authentic activities. Professionals work closely with the participating students and provide guidance and resources to the girls.

  • STUDENTS…
  • attend a concentrated, one-week summer institute to raise awareness about the skills needed to be successful in STEM-related careers;
  • have an opportunity to listen and discuss career issues with successful professionals;
  • build lasting relationships with adults and peers from different communities;
  • problem-solve to build confidence and skills in science, technology, engineering, and math;
  • document their experiences, skills, and reflections through the creation of a digital media project;
  • participate in discovery learning activities as they connect academics and work-to-career options; and
  • present projects at the Connecticut Innovation Exposition held each May.
